The 2012 season has ended for the Marysville Gold Sox, but it went out with a bang. Sunday was the final night, but people who were at Saturday's game will remember it for a long time. Center fielder Tito Quiñones (Eastern New Mexico) sang the national anthem before the game, then hit a grand slam for his only home run of the year. Also, starting pitcher Nick Hudson (Cal State East Bay) hadn't given up a hit yet at that point, and didn't the entire night. Hudson was mobbed at the mound when he completed the no-hitter.
Several team records were set in 2012, including most home runs by the team, most by one player, individual batting average, slugging percentage, and on-base average were also set. After 15 straight wins to start the year, the Gold Sox ended up with a 36-11 record (.766).
As I have done the last couple of seasons, I concluded the final broadcast with a little poem about the season, and getting in some thank yous. I'm not exactly Maya Angelou or even Dr. Seuss for that matter, but here's my little diddy about the 2012 Sox...

Well, this 2012 season has really flown by A lot to recap, but I'll give it a try Lots of highs, and of course a few lows Not a complete list, but okay, here goes... 15 wins in a row, right out of the gate Dating back to last year, 35 straight Victor Romero—the MVP 9 homers this year. wow, what a spree! Speaking of homers, a team record number They gave up the most too—kind of a bummer 8 times in a game, Mitch Wilhite drove a guy in And congrats to Jack Johnson on his 200th win. Six walkoff wins to get us excited No better way to get a crowd ignited The dented car on that freak play I'm just glad the outfielder's okay And wow what a game, just last night! Huddy's no-hitter—the season highlight In the very same game, a Tito grand slammer He even sung the Star Spangled Banner Yes, this year has had its ups and its downs But smiles overwhelmingly outnumbered the frowns Five losses in a row, and three to Seattle But the guys hung in there, and continued to battle The trip to Humboldt, though they lost both times Both games were close, so that was fine The lumber mill, lunch, and a trip to the beach Those are experiences—things you can't teach But the season is over, and wow how time flies The guys are downstairs, saying their goodbyes Before we do the same, and bid our adieus If you don't mind, first some thank yous |
To (owners) Tom and Karyn (Lininger), who have been so great No words can total how much I appreciate To Jack, who has had to put up with me again I can't tell you how helpful he's been To the Assistant Coach, his name is Jim Stassi He's what baseball's all about—nothing but classy To Erik Lambert, head trainer extrordinaire Ten years of memories and stories we share To Pat and Mike, and the rest of the staff They work hard, but can still have a laugh Something new for me this year, I learned how to tweet So thanks to my followers, that's pretty sweet To my producers: Marina, Brian, Dave and Moe The unhearalded, and real stars of the show. To Gordon and Chris, who gave me this job And the guys in the press box—James, Kevin and Bob The players of course, they're all such great guys And to all of you listening—you're tops in my eyes To Gold Sox fans—you are the greatest I just try to keep you up to date with the latest Sure, this season has had some hitches I've missed some calls, and oh, those technical glitches Some nights on the air have been better than others They would have all been better, if I had my druthers As for my future, up here in the booth I'm really not sure, to tell you the truth Ten collegiate years, plus the pro one All of them, have been nothing but fun But this season's is over, its time to move on Again—amazing how quickly it's gone So a whole-hearted thanks to all, to me you're the bomb This is Gold Sox baseball on KUBA, and kubaradio.com |
